MAKING THE MOST OF THE ENERGY TAX CREDIT

This is a great time to consider projects that will also make your home more energy efficient. A federal energy tax credit is now available, through 2006 and 2007, that gives homeowners significant tax considerations that can ultimately lower costs. Tax credits for home improvements are capped at $500 over the two-year period, with the exception of certain solar related improvements, which allow for a higher tax credit.

A tax credit can provide a significant savings because it directly reduces the tax itself, unlike a tax deduction, which reduces the amount of income subject to tax.

The above is general information. To determine how the energy tax credit specifically applies to your project, contact your tax consultant.
